Identify who makes and services the loan
A direct FSA farm loan is made and serviced by the Farm Service Agency. A guaranteed loan is originated by an approved commercial lender, with FSA providing a qualifying guarantee to support that lender’s exposure. This distinction affects the application channel, rate-setting process and servicing relationship. Both routes are tied to agricultural purposes and program eligibility; a federal guarantee does not mean that the borrower can stop repaying or that any farm proposal will be accepted.
Prepare for the appropriate application route
Discuss the project with the appropriate office or lender and establish which ownership or operating product fits the proposed expenditure. Financial statements, production information, management experience and a repayment forecast help explain the request. Where a guarantee is involved, ask which fees apply and what conditions must be satisfied before funding. USDA’s Loan Assistance Tool can help identify relevant pathways, but completing an online questionnaire is different from receiving an approval. Keep the written financing decision and final loan contract separate from preliminary eligibility guidance.
